This opening module sets the stage for the course. You’ll explore the concept of a “culture of well-being” and its positive impact on your organization. Here, you’ll delve into the cost of poor employee well-being, including absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover. By contrast, you’ll learn how promoting well-being can lead to a significant return on investment (ROI) through increased productivity, employee engagement, and reduced healthcare costs. Additionally, the module examines the relevant health and safety legislation, like the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 1974, highlighting the employer’s duty of care for employee well-being. Finally, you’ll explore the critical role line managers play in championing a culture of well-being within their teams. This section equips you with strategies for fostering open communication, providing support, and recognizing signs of potential health issues.

In this module, you’ll delve into the world of workplace health risk management. The focus here is on identifying and mitigating a wide range of health risks that can impact your workforce. You’ll learn methods for recognizing physical hazards like slips, trips, falls, noise, and radiation. Additionally, the module explores biological hazards such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens, and equips you with strategies to minimize exposure. Importantly, the course emphasizes the growing recognition of psychosocial hazards. These are work-related factors that can negatively affect mental well-being, such as workload, work pressure, lack of control, and poor workplace relationships. You’ll learn how to identify these hazards and develop strategies to mitigate their impact on employee well-being.

Module 3 focuses on the concept of fitness for work. This module explores the importance of ensuring employees are physically and mentally capable of performing their duties safely. You’ll gain insights into the legal framework surrounding fitness for work and the role of occupational health assessments. Additionally, the module explores strategies for supporting employees with pre-existing health conditions or those returning from illness or injury. This may involve workplace adjustments, phased return-to-work programs, and access to appropriate support services.

The final module focuses on practical strategies and interventions you can implement to promote employee well-being. Here, you’ll explore methods for encouraging healthy behaviors in the workplace, such as promoting physical activity, healthy eating habits, and stress management techniques. Additionally, the module delves into strategies for creating a positive and supportive work environment, fostering open communication, and building a sense of community within your organization. You’ll also learn about the importance of work-life balance and strategies for promoting flexible work arrangements to reduce work-related stress and burnout.
