You have up to two years to complete the qualification. Average completion time: 4-12 months.
Time dedication: 530 hours approx (250 of which guided learning)
Study/exam/assessment method
This qualification is competence-based, candidates must demonstrate the level of competence described in the units. Assessment is the process of measuring a candidate’s skill, knowledge and understanding against the standards set in the qualification.
The qualification must be internally assessed by an appropriately experienced and qualified assessor.
Each candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their achievement of all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.
Evidence can include:
– continuous personal development (CPD)
– witness testimony
– reflective accounts
Learning outcomes set out what a candidate is expected to know, understand or be able to do.
Assessment criteria specify the standard a candidate must meet to show the learning outcome has been achieved.
Assessments are carried out remotely by an assessor who will give feedback via email on completion of each module – you cannot fail! Simply re-upload the files once the amendments are made and resubmit for assessment.
Entry requirements
An English verbal and writing proficiency, to allow you to discuss and write reflective accounts related to the learning outcomes and your work activities. You have exposure to writing, reviewing and amending safety policies and procedures.
You are involved in various aspects of workplace emergency response.

Typically, learners can complete the qualification within 12 to 24 months (approx 530 between learning and building portfolio). No exam. Instead, assessment is through the completion of a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates the learner’s competence in the various units. This evidence may include reports, workplace documents, witness testimonies, and reflective accounts. Assessors will review this portfolio and may also conduct observations and professional discussions.
Upon completion, a level 5 diploma will be awarded, and subsequently learners may be eligible to apply for professional recognition from various chartered bodies depending on their specific criteria. The Chartered Managers Institute and the Institute of Leadership and Management are the two leading institutions to apply with. This qualification is well-regarded and can also open doors to further professional development opportunities.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, it is recommended that learners should be in a role that allows them to demonstrate their management and leadership skills. Previous experience in a managerial position is beneficial but not mandatory.
